  48. is a summary of the installation steps.

  88. installation guide covers installing both WD1004-27X and WD1004A-27X controller

  98.                              SOME PRELIMINARY STEPS

  100. Before you begin the actual installation of the hardware and software, 
  101. there are some preliminary steps that you need to do.
  102.

  107. The installation requires that you gather the following tools and supplies.

  111.   -  XT compatible computer with space to hold the internal drive

  113.   -  RLL hard disk drive(s)<187>with ST506 interface
  114.  
  115.   -  interface cables (20-pin data cables & 34-pin control cable)
  116.  
  117.   -  DOS version 2.0 or later (DOS 3.1 or later recommended)
  118.  
  119.   -  installation manual for XT compatible computer
  120.  
  121.   -  installation manual for hard disk drive

  135. IDENTIFY DRIVE
  136. **************************************************************************

  138. The WD1004-27X and WD1004A-27X boards work with any hard disk drive that has 
  139. the ST506/412 drive interface and no more than 1024 cylinders and 16 heads. The 
  140. Seagate 238 hard disk drive unit is such a drive.
  141.  
  142. Look in your drive manual to verify that you have an ST506/412 RLL drive or 
  143. check with your dealer.
  144.  
  145. Then check the drive manual for the drive parameters, such as those listed in 
  146. Table 1-1. You'll need this information to select the proper low level format.

  155. This board works with RLL drives. If you have an MFM drive you should use the 
  156. WDXT-GEN2 or WD1004A-WX1 board.

  159. IDENTIFY BOARD
  160. **************************************************************************

  162. This document describes the installation of the two controller boards, WD1004-
  163. 27X and WD1004A-27X. These controllers are similar functionally, except for a 
  164. few features. These boards are described below.
  165.  
  166. WD1004-27X Board
  167.  
  168. Figure 1-1 shows the connector locations (J1, J2, J3, J4, and J5) on the WD1004-
  169. 27X board and the location of the jumpers (W17 to W22, R23, and W25 to W28).
  170.  
  171. The WD1004-27X board has a connector at J4, which allows the controller to 
  172. connect power to FileCard drives and jumpers W17 to W22, which permit selection 
  173. of additional options.  Also the WD1004-27X board can be used as a secondary 
  174. controller.

  176. WD1004A-27X Board
  177.  
  178. Figure 1-2 shows the connector locations (J1, J2, J3, and J5) on the WD1004A-
  179. 27X board and the location of the jumpers (R23, and W25 to W28).  The WD1004A-
  180. 27X board cannot be used as a secondary controller.

  265. BIOS ROM Incompatibility
  266.  
  267. BIOS is an acronym for Basic Input Output System. ROM is an acronym for Read 
  268. Only Memory. The BIOS ROM is a program on a computer chip that tells your 
  269. computer how to operate devices attached to your computer.
  270.  
  271. Some XT compatible computers do not operate with the Western Digital BIOS ROM 
  272. because of an incompatibility. Most of these computers are listed in Appendix 
  273. A. Check Table A-1 to see if you have one of these computers.
  274.  
  275. If this is the case, you need to disable the Western Digital BIOS ROM by 
  276. setting a jumper resistor.  If you have one of these computers, omit the low 
  277. level format in this guide and instead follow your computer manufacturer's 
  278. software installation instructions for low level formatting.
  279.

  281. JUMPERS
  282. **************************************************************************
  283.  
  284. A jumper allows you to change certain functions on your controller board. 
  285. Western Digital set the jumpers for the most common applications. It is 
  286. unlikely that you will need to change any of the jumper settings.
  287.  
  288. Appendix B contains a complete explanation of jumpers.
  289.

  297. Do I Need To Change Any Jumpers?
  298.  
  299. No. Do NOT change any jumpers on your new WD1004 or WD1004A controller boards, 
  300. unless you have one of the following conditions:
  301.  
  302.   -  The new board is your second hard disk controller in the 
  303.      system.
  304.  
  305.   -  You have another peripheral unit which uses interrupt signal 
  306.      IRQ5.
  307.  
  308.   -  You have a BIOS ROM which is incompatible with your new 
  309.      controller.
  310.  
  311.   -  You have a hard disk drive whose parameters are different 
  312.      from those listed in Table 1-1. This requires you to do the dynamic 
  313.      configuration.
  314.  
  315. Change Jumpers
  316.  
  317. When you have one of the special conditions listed above, you need to add a 
  318. jumper. In all other cases, do NOT add a jumper.

  331.   -  If the WD1004-27X board is the second controller, change 
  332.      the controller address at W21 & W22. Check the first controller 
  333.      manufacturer's manual for the addresses and also see Appendix B.
  334.  
  335.   -  If another peripheral uses IRQ5, add a jumper at W27.
  336.  
  337.   -  If the computer motherboard BIOS ROM is incompatible, add 
  338.      a jumper resistor at R23.
  339.  
  340.   -  If you plan to do a dynamic configuration, remove the jumper 
  341.      at W25 and place it at W26.
  342.  
  343. See Appendix B for information on changing jumpers.

  346. SET HARD DISK DRIVE CONFIGURATION
  347. **************************************************************************
  348.  
  349. This section "Set Hard Disk Drive Configuration" refers to procedures that you 
  350. do to your hard disk drives and not to your WD1004 or WD1004A controller. Since 
  351. the WD1004 and WD1004A boards work with many hard disk drives, you need to 
  352. consult your drive manufacturer's manual for exact details.
  353.  
  354. You need to set the configuration for your hard disk drive unit, before you 
  355. install the unit into your computer. You set your hard disk configuration by 
  356. adjusting jumpers, switches, or termination resistors on the hard disk unit.
  357.  
  358. Drive Settings
  359.  
  360. The two settings that you can change are:
  361.  
  362.   -  drive number
  363.  
  364.   -  drive termination resistor
  365.  
  366. You frequently don't have to modify the factory settings. The exact number of 
  367. settings that you change depends on your disk drive and computer.
  368.  
  369. Control Cables (34-pin Connectors)
  370.  
  371. Setting the drive number depends on the type of control cable that connects 
  372. your drive to your controller board. The two types of cables are listed below.
  373.  
  374.   -  without a twisted section
  375.  
  376.   -  with a twisted section
  377.  
  378. Do NOT use cables from floppy drives. Hard disk cables are different!
  379.  
  380. First identify which cable you are going to use. Look at the control cable and 
  381. determine whether it is twisted. The control cable has the 34-pin connectors.

  397. If you already have one hard disk attached to your WD1004 or WD1004A board and 
  398. you plan to use the existing cable in your computer, you may have to open the 
  399. computer case. See your computer manufacturer's instructions.

  401. Set Drive Number
  402.  
  403. When the 34-pin control cable has a twisted section, set the jumpers or 
  404. switches on both drives for drive select 2. See Figure 1-3.

  419. When the 34-pin control cable has NO twisted section, set a jumper or switch on 
  420. the first drive for drive select 1 and the second drive for drive select 2.
  421.  
  422. See the drive manufacturer's manual for detailed instructions on how to set the 
  423. drive number.

  425. Set Drive Termination Resistor
  426.  
  427. The drive termination resistor should only be on the drive, which is the last 
  428. physical drive installed in a daisy chain configuration. When you have two hard 
  429. disk drives, remove or disable the termination resistor from the drive, which 
  430. you plan to attach to the middle connector .
  431.  
  432. If you have only one fixed hard disk drive, do NOT change the termination 
  433. resistor. Drives are usually set at the factory as the first hard disk drive 
  434. (i.e., to be the only drive in the system).
  435.  
  436. See the drive manufacturer's manual for detailed instructions on how to remove 
  437. or disable the termination resistor.
  438.  
  439. Note: A daisy chain cable has three connectors. The electrical signal in a 
  440. daisy chain configuration moves from one connector to the next in sequence.

  443. CHECK COMPUTER
  444. (Incompatible System BIOS ROM)
  445. **************************************************************************
  446.  
  447. Some early versions of XT type computers<187> have system BIOS ROMs that are 
  448. incompatible with your WD1004-27X or WD1004A-27X controller. Follow the 
  449. instructions in the next section "Read System BIOS ROM Date" to determine if 
  450. you have one of these systems.

  464. Read System BIOS ROM Date
  465.  
  466. DEBUG is a program which allows you to look at information in your computer on 
  467. a fundamental level. You can enter the Debug program and use it to read a 
  468. portion of your computer's ROM (read only memory). By following the steps 
  469. below, you can determine the date the system BIOS ROM was created for your 
  470. computer.
  471.  
  472. The Debug program should be supplied on your DOS diskette. See your DOS system 
  473. manual for complete instructions on how to use the Debug program.
  474.  
  475. Place the diskette containing the Debug program in drive A, then
  476.

  497.                           HOW TO INSTALL YOUR HARDWARE
  498.  
  499. This section tells you how to install the hardware portion of your WD1004-27X 
  500. or WD1004A-27X controller board. You will install the controller board in an XT-
  501. compatible expansion slot.
  502.  
  503. Do not attempt to install your hardware unless you have set the hard disk drive 
  504. configuration as explained on page 1-9 and set the WD1004 or WD1004A board 
  505. jumpers, if required.
  506.  
  507. The installation requires you to remove the cover from your computer. See your 
  508. PC manual for exact instructions on how to remove the cover.
  509.  
  510. @BODY TEXT PBA = If you are replacing an existing controller, then you also 
  511. have to remove your old hard disk controller.
  512.  
  513. If you want two hard disks on one controller, use a daisy chain cable to 
  514. connect them onto one controller board. A daisy chain cable has 3 connectors.
  515.  
  516. 1.   Turn your computer power switch to OFF and unplug power cord.

  529. 2.   Use a screwdriver to loosen the cover screws. Then remove the computer 
  530.      cover, so that you can see the expansion slots.
  531.  
  532. 3.   Place your hard disk drive unit(s) into the computer case 
  533.      and mount per the manufacturer's installation instructions.
  534.  
  535. 4.   Look and see which expansion slots are empty. Use an empty slot that has 
  536.      the same type of edge connectors as the WD1004 or WD1004A 
  537.      board, except as noted below.
  538.  
  539.      Note: For IBM XT owners: DO NOT use the slot closest 
  540.      to the power supply. Use an expansion slot at least one position removed 
  541.      from the power supply.
  542.  
  543.      You may have to leave the fastening screws loosely connected, so that you 
  544.      can attach the cables.
  545.  
  546.      Or if you are removing a controller, locate the one which has the old 
  547.      controller in it. Use this expansion slot.
  548.  
  549.      Note: You can also install a new fixed hard disk drive on an existing 
  550.      WD1004 or 1004A controller. See Appendix A.
  551.  
  552. 5A.  If you are removing an old controller, loosen the screw which holds the 
  553.      old controller board in place. Then slide the old board out of the 
  554.      expansion slot and remove the cables. Locate the old rear slot cover and 
  555.      place it on your computer case. (You probably removed this old slot cover 
  556.      when you installed your old controller board.)
  557.  
  558. 5B.  If you are using a "new" expansion slot, remove the screw, but keep the 
  559.      rear slot cover in place. Save the screw to hold the new controller board.
  560.  
  561. 6.   Connect 34-pin wide control cable to your WD1004 or WD1004A board. Follow 
  562.      steps A or B. These instructions are for both one or two drives on the 
  563.      same controller.
  564.  
  565. A.   (for 1 drive only) Connect the 34-pin (wide control cable) 
  566.      connector to J1 on the controller board. Attach Pin 1 of the cable 
  567.      connector to Pin 1 on the controller board. See Figure 1-1 or Figure 
  568.      1-2.
  569.  
  570.      Pin 1 of the cable connector is marked and is on the color coded edge of
  571.      the cable. Do NOT force the cables and connectors.
  572.  
  573. B.   (for 2 drives only) If you are installing two hard disk 
  574.      drives on one controller, use a daisy chain cable. A daisy chain cable 
  575.      has 3 connectors.
  576.  
  577.      Connect the 34-pin wide connector on the longer daisy chain 
  578.      cable section to J1 on the WD1004 or WD1004A board. See Figure 1-1 
  579.      or Figure 1-2 and Figure 2-1.

  666.      to the drive. Follow instructions for either A or B.

  668. A.   Locate the internal 4-pin power connector(s) on your computer. 
  669.      See your computer manual. Connect this internal 4-pin 
  670.      power connector to your fixed hard disk drive unit's power connector 
  671.      plug.

  673. B.   (for 2 drives only) If you are installing 2 drives, you 
  674.      need either two internal power connectors on your computer or you 
  675.      need a "y" adapter, which splits the power cable. See the manufacturer's 
  676.      manual.

  678.      Connect the second drive unit to the second power connector 
  679.      plug or to the "y" adapter.

  681. 12.  Install the controller board into the expansion slot that 
  682.      you selected in step 4. The WD1004 or WD1004A's edge connectors (shown 
  683.      in Figure 1-1 or Figure 1-2) fit firmly into the computer's motherboard. 
  684.      See your computer manual for the location of your computer's motherboard. 
  685.      Press firmly on the WD1004 or WD1004A board as you insert it into 
  686.      the expansion slot. Check that the board is seated properly by pressing 
  687.      down firmly on both ends of the board.

  689. 13.  After the board is seated firmly in the expansion slot 
  690.      socket, secure the board using the clip that is on the end of your 
  691.      board. Place the bracket screw (which you removed in step 5) over 
  692.      the clip and rear slot cover. Then screw the clip and slot cover to 
  693.      the computer chassis.

  697.            When routing cables, be careful not to pinch them. 
  698.            Cables must not get caught between the cover and the boards nor 
  699.            should they obstruct any air flow path from fans or vents.

  702. 14.  Place extra cable lengths so that they are out of the way.

  704. 15.  Replace the computer cover. Then plug the power cord back 
  705.      into your computer.

  707. Your hardware controller installation is complete. However, your WD1004 or 
  708. WD1004A controller board is really a complex circuit composed of both hardware 
  709. and software, so that while the hardware installation is complete, you still 
  710. need to install the software. Proceed to the next section for the software 
  711. installation steps.
